Wang Chung's Karaoke Bar

Wang Chung's is a local karaoke bar located in Waikiki specializing in unique drinks, fun times, and the occasional show stopping ballad.

Bigger Wang's, Bigger Brand

In anticipation of moving to a new, larger location (dubbed Big Wang's), owner Dan Chang wanted to “level up” the look of Wang Chung's into something more polished while still retaining the asian-pop-culture-influenced, whimsical charm of the original (Little Wang's) location. I worked with friend and fellow designer-turned-landscape architect Matt Higa to craft the new brand, inspired by a prominent mural in Little Wang's, which featured a Japanese okame mask, a symbol of good fortune, happiness, and laughter.

Bar Interiors

We also advised Dan on ways to bring the space together, and provide focal points to draw the eye and create a fun, Instagrammable atmosphere.

A mural was designed and painted on the largest wall in the space, and illustrations of Maneki Neko were created to serve as wall art. The neko canvases have become an iconic part of the Wang's brand, expanding into multiple series and giveaway prizes, as well as appearing on merch.

10 Years of Wang's

In 2019, Wang Chung's was about to reach a milestone 10th anniversary. Dan came to me with plans for a big celebration event and wanted some designs for merchandise to give out at the party. I also suggested we update the mural to mark the occasion and reinvigorate the space. Dan loved the idea and with less than 2 months before the big party, we got to work immediately.
